The Coming Judgment, Part 2
Today, we begin to explore Jesus’ first answer: when will the temple be destroyed? I will argue that this prophecy was fulfilled when the Romans destroyed the Jerusalem temple in AD 70. Jesus’ goal in this chapter is to announce future events that will then vindicate him as a prophet when his words are fulfilled. One of the reasons we tell you that you can trust Jesus’ words is because many of them have been fulfilled, including the majority of his words in this chapter.
So, let’s examine how Jesus warns the disciples of the coming judgment. In each section, he shows them how they can be prepared for this coming judgment upon Jerusalem. Remember what we noted in the conclusion to last week’s message: every historical judgment in the Bible looks ahead to the final judgment of all mankind. We can therefore ask ourselves from this passage, When judgment comes, how will you respond? I’ll give two answers to that question this morning.
