Mark’s purpose in writing his Gospel is to set before us the terms of discipleship. What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? What cost comes to those who do? This story reinforces that challenge as it contrasts John, the faithful follower of Jesus, even unto death, with Herod and others, who followed their passions instead of the way of righteousness.
