Jesus’ Authority in Our Mission, Part 2
Matthew 10
This chapter may first seem distant because some of the statements relate specifically to the disciple’s initial preaching tour (vv. 5b–6, 9–10). But others indicate a further mission and more time (vv. 18, 22b). Jesus’ words here have relevance for both audiences: the disciples will experience what he says on a certain level, but Matthew is also composing his gospel for later and future readers who will experience some of the further dimensions of Jesus’ words (and not some of the immediate specifics [cf. Matt 24]). Therefore, the chapter demonstrates how Jesus manifests his authority in our mission.
