Here is the thing we need to know as we enter this passage: not every story of unfaithfulness ends with failure. Woven throughout this story of unfaithfulness is the gospel thread of Jesus’ faithfulness. In fact, Jesus’ faithfulness is the overarching theme that provides the contrast to the disciples’ unfaithfulness. And it assures us that there is hope for the unfaithful. Jesus’ faithfulness overcomes our unfaithfulness. Therefore, on the basis of this passage, I encourage you to recognize your unfaithfulness, and embrace Jesus’ faithfulness.
