Power and Service
In today's passage in Mark, James and John come to Jesus with the request, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory” (v. 37). Jesus, in his response to them, does not promise them power and prestige, but again calls them to service, pointing to his own serving and suffering as the path they should travel. In fact, it is only because he serves and them and suffers for them that they can be rescued from their pursuit of power. And so we see in this passage today that Jesus’s sufferings rescue us from the foolish pursuit of power.
