Today’s passage actually finishes the conversation from the previous verses and shows us how serious it is not to take Jesus' instructions there seriously. You see how Jesus’ severe language throughout this passage is aimed at getting the disciples to take his instructions on humility and service seriously. To put it simply, if we cannot put to death our pride, then we face the severe consequence of the death of the soul.
